New Aveo RS is a Looker

The Korean-based Chevrolet Aveo has never been a hot item here in the States. It’s cheap and it’s meant to be. Regardless of what dying Detroiters claim, hatches are a rapidly growing item here in America. The Aveo RS, a concept based on the next-gen subcompact, hopes to win over younger buyers with a little more pizazz. 19 in. wheels, performance tires, uprated brakes, and a mean bodykit provide visual cues; real power comes from a 1.4 L inline-four linked to a 6-spd. MT. Problem here is that power doesn’t even reach 140 hp. Put it bluntly: you’re talking econobox territory.

Audi A1 Looking Less Likely to Hit US Shores

It’s unwelcome news, but Inside Line is reporting from an inside source (cute play on words, eh?) that Audi execs are not keen on exporting the A1 to the US market. The A1 sub-compact aims to target the Mini audience; but company chiefs are not confident they can make a long-term profit selling a luxury sub in the lower $20,000 range. Audi USA may, instead, focus on widening the A3 lineup to include a two-door hatch and possibly a future cabrio.

Tension Between Mazda and Ford?

There may be tension within the ranks of Mazda. Apparently some in the Mazda camp feel that Ford has stunted its Japanese partner’s own growth in the US. Among the sporting element in US operations, there was disappointment that not enough was done to keep the RX-8 competitive, especially when Ford’s less-expensive and much faster retro Mustang hit the scene and undercut the rotary sport coupe.

Of larger concern, Mazda only has a single hybrid in the US–a rebadged Ford Escape. Previous reports on the blogosphere have stated that the Mazda6 sedan will not receive a hybrid option for fear of intruding on the Fusion’s turf. Mazda has also wanted to bring its Mazda2 subcompact to the States, but there was worry that it would conflict with Ford’s Fiesta campaign.

Mazda may acquire former Chrysler/GM dealers as a way to widen its grip within the US market, but company execs are worried that a another fuel shock will damage sales with no sub-compact or hybrid-car available.
