Steve Saleen completes his SMS muscle car trio with the introduction of the SMS 620 Camaro.  The Mustang and Challenger have already received the SMS brand treatment in the forms of the SMS 460 Mustang and the SMS 570 Challenger.

The 0-60 specs are 4.3 seconds for the 620 and a hair above 4.0 seconds for the 620X.  Acceleration is provided courtesy of a 6.2L GM V-8.  A supercharger will help boost performance to 575 hp and 600 ft-lbs of torque.  The more extensively tuned 620X will get 715 hp and 700 ft-lbs of torque.  Owners of the SMS Camaro can choose from a manual or automatic transmission.

To help you handle all that brute power, Saleen has provided the SMS Camaro with upgraded brakes and suspension.  To keep things stylish, they’ve done up the interior with leather and fancy gauges.

Ford has revealed plans for an extensive overhaul to it’s engine and transmission lineup for 2010. As a part of it’s global plan to improve fuel economy Ford will introduce 9 new (or updated) engines and 6 transmissions before the end of this year.

The Mustang family will receive 2 new engine options: a V-6 and a V-8. The 3.7-L V-6 will provide no less than 305 hp and 30 highway mpg - performance which Ford says no other V-6 in the world can compete with. The 5.0-L V-8 returns to the GT, with a tire-shredding 412 hp and 390 ft-lbs of torque. By the way, it does that while providing 25 mpg or better on the highway.

Ford predicts that the 1.6 L Ti-VCT 4 cylinder will propel the Fiesta no less than 40 highway miles on a gallon of gas, when paired with the PowerShift dual clutch transmission. Read more

The ever-hungry EPA is saying that Ford has made the biggest gains in fuel economy and carbon reduction.  Better yet, Ford’s refreshed ‘11 Mustang engines will take back the power/mileage territory from the Camaro.  The beloved 5.0 V-8 will be back as a moniker, now producing more than 410 hp and 390 ft.-lbs. of torque.  That’s hot off the news of the Camaro-beating V-6 set to be standard.  Ford’s new debt consolidation and repayment plan has investors glowing too.  We can’t complain.

The Ten Best Concepts of the Decade #4: Shelby Cobra

Part of the short-lived Ford Revival, the Cobra continued a retro theme Dearborn initiated late in the Nineties. The Cobra was to borrow from the ever-loved Ford GT, using a shortened chassis and adapted suspension. Under the hood was a 600+ hp 6.4 L V10 mated to a 6-spd. gated-shift. The roadster could pass 180 mph, while reaching sixty at around four seconds. The Cobra was to be slotted above the Ford Mustang and below the Shelby GR1 (the Ford GT’s planned replacement). In the end, neither the Cobra nor the GR1 ever got off the ground. Ford’s sliding fortunes killed any such projects in favor of greener pastures.

It’s no secret that Chevy’s Camaro has been spanking the face-lifted Mustang in sales.  To try to end that run, Ford’s offering a new 3.7 L dual-cam V-6 as the starting engine for the 2011 model year.  The new six achieves 305 hp (more than the ‘05 V-8) and 280 ft.-lbs.  The engine will be linked to a 6-spd. “6R60″ transmission for smooth and effortless shifts.  The base coupe’s suspension will be identical to the GT’s, with performance adjustments now being standard.
