The anticipation is over: Toyota’s new GT 86 sports car makes its world debut at the Tokyo motor show on November 30. The compact 2+2 model, one of the most keenly awaited new cars of the coming year, will go on sale in the UK in June 2012.

The GT 86 has been conceived as an entirely driver-focused machine, designed to deliver the core qualities of the classic sports car experience. That means precise, instant response to the smallest throttle and steering inputs and the kind of performance that appeals to those for whom driving is a passion, not a necessity.

The GT 86 is built on a new platform, with a highly aerodynamic bodyshell stretched tight over the car’s mechanical elements. Rather than fitting a heavy, large capacity powertrain, Toyota has opted instead to go back to its sporting roots, installing a compact, front-mounted, free-revving petrol engine that drives the rear wheels.

This four-cylinder “boxer” unit generates 197bhp at 7,000rpm and maximum torque of 205Nm at 6,600rpm, giving the GT 86 brisk, engaging performance.

The powertrain is matched to the world’s most compact four-seat design to create a car that benefits from light weight, low inertia and a low centre of gravity to achieve the best possible power-to-weight ratio. For the driver that means lively, accessible performance and dynamic character with minimal intrusion from electronic systems.

Packaging

The GT 86 measures 4,240mm long, 1,285mm high and 1775mm wide, with a wheelbase of 2,570mm, dimensions which make it the most compact four-seater sports car available today.

Both the powertrain and the driving position have been set as low and as far back as possible to achieve the best balance: the car has a near-perfect 53:47 front-to-rear weight distribution. The flat-four engine format and the driver’s hip point – the lowest of any current Toyota production model – together give the GT 86 an ultra-low centre of gravity, at just 460mm.

The GT 86 makes the most of a light kerb weight, making it easy for drivers to exploit its nimble handling and cornering poise. The suspension features MacPherson struts at the front and double wishbones at the rear. The car rides on 17-inch wheels and is fitted with ventilated disc brakes fore and aft.

World’s first horizontally opposed engine with D-4S

The GT 86’s engine is the result of a joint Toyota and Subaru development programme that brings together their technical know-how and mutual passion for sports cars.

Toyota has added its D-4S injection technology to Subaru’s new, horizontally opposed, naturally aspirated 1,998cc four-cylinder boxer engine. This system features separate twin injectors for both direct and port injection, and a high 12.5:1 compression ratio, increasing power and torque across a wide range of engine speeds without sacrificing fuel efficiency and environmental performance.

The flat-four engine has equal bore and stroke of 86.0mm and drives through either a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission. The manual offers quick, precise shifts using a tactile, short-throw lever; the automatic transmission can be controlled using paddle shifts mounted on the steering wheel.

Power is distributed to the rear wheels via a limited slip differential to give the best possible grip in all driving conditions. The ABS and switchable vehicle stability control systems have been tuned specifically to deliver dynamic stability at the limit of the car’s performance envelope with minimal electronic intervention to help preserve the purity of the driving experience.

Design

The design of the GT 86 successfully works within the technical constraints of achieving the most compact dimensions possible, a low centre of gravity and aerodynamic performance inspired by motorsport technology, while also displaying evocative, sweeping styling that recalls Toyota’s sports car heritage.

Toyota’s new design language informs the styling, as in the way attention is focused on the lower part of the car with the large lower grille. Elsewhere the “keen” approach can be witnessed in the clear, expressive lines.

The lower grille’s “scorpion” look gives the GT 86 a more powerful appearance, with further sporting details including the model-specific 17-inch alloy wheels, rear spoiler, twin exhausts and the “86” piston logo that denotes the car’s special powertrain configuration.

On board, the ergonomics and function of every element the driver interacts with have been scrutinised to make driving the car as natural, instinctive and rewarding as possible. For example, the steering wheel has a 365mm diameter, making it the smallest ever fitted to a Toyota, and it is trimmed in buckskin, developed from exhaustive feedback from test drivers on how to achieve the best steering performance and grip.

The three-meter instrument cluster is arranged around a large tachometer, its design benefiting from close attention to the positioning of the displays, markings and typeface. The result is the best possible visibility and readability. The driver-focus of the cockpit is further reinforced by the carbon-effect trim, all-black roof lining, red stitching on the upholstery, aviation-style rocker switches and lightweight, aluminium pedals.

Toyota’s 50-year sports car heritage

The GT 86 may be launched as the world’s only current sports car to feature a front-mounted, horizontally opposed engine and rear-wheel drive, but it cannot claim to be the first. That honour is held by Toyota’s two-cylinder boxer-engined Sports 800, which the company began developing in 1962. Since then, Toyota has established a long history of producing exciting, driver-focused sports cars with a front-engine, rear-wheel drive format that have proved as popular with the public as they have been successful in competition.

The beautiful 2000 GT, a coupe powered by a 2.0-litre straight-six engine, was first displayed at the 1965 Tokyo motor show and helped establish Toyota’s global reputation as a sports car manufacturer.

Launched in 1971, the first Celica models featured rear-wheel drive powertrains and were praised by enthusiasts for their agility. All four Supra generations came with straight-six engines and rear-wheel drive, while from 1984 the MR2 won recognition as one of the best handling sports cars in motoring history.

The inspiration for the GT 86, however, is the Corolla GT (or Levin) AE86, a car with an enduring reputation for delivering sheer excitement and capturing the fundamental joy of driving. Its front-engine, rear-wheel drive package, compact dimensions, light weight, impeccable balance and superior power-to-weight ratio made it a must-have choice for rallying and circuit driving throughout its production life, from 1983 to 1987. Here in the UK the GT claimed two British Touring Car Championship titles and a series of top-level rally victories.

The GT 86 is a genuinely lightweight machine that offers the intimacy and involvement of a car that can be driven as though an extension of the driver’s body. In this way, it perfectly recaptures the exhilarating spirit of the last of the AE86. And, with numerous customisable parts, its shares its predecessor’s aim to be an affordable car that will evolve with its owner.

The 2011 SEMA Show will be the scene for the debut of the Oakley Surf Tacoma. From the coast of Baja to the cold water of Santa Cruz, Calif., the Oakley Surf Tacoma has the ability to live at the beach and go anywhere in search of mega waves. Australian surfing pro Tom Whitaker will be on hand to talk about the Oakley Surf Tacoma at a press conference in the Toyota exhibit at the SEMA Show on Nov. 1at 10 a.m. Pacific Time.

Built using a rugged Toyota Tacoma 4×4 pickup equipped with a V6 engine and TRD supercharger that generates 304 horsepower, the truck was customized by Smithbuilt to be a Surfing Big Wave Assault Machine. Additional performance modifications include a Flowmaster stainless steel exhaust, an Icon stage 3 lift kit, Billet top A arms, new leaf springs for added height, a new front coilover system, and Walker Evans 17 x 8 bead lock wheels with a flat black finish mounted to BF Goodrich 285/75-17 all-terrain tires.

Inside modifications include Wet Okole Hawaii custom embroidered seat covers, Topstitch interior modifications on the door panels, head liner and carpet kit throughout, a Kicker sound system and an Oakley icon.

This unique Toyota Tacoma is a surfer’s dream as it is equipped with a purpose-built roof racking system for heavy hauling and can be accessed with ease for surf bag stowage and multiple board storage. The truck bed system, which has a lot of storage for wet suits and other equipment, also comes with an ice chest and barbeque grill. Meals and cold drinks can be enjoyed under a shade system that is equipped in the back of the roof rack system. Living comfort is also achieved with and integrated shower system. Illumination is supplemented with Vision X lighting in the bed and front driving lights.

After SEMA, the Oakley Surf Tacoma will follow the waves and appear at all Oakley surf competitions. Surf’s up!

The Toyota exhibit at the 2011 SEMA Show will feature the debut of the Long Beach Racers Tacoma. Inspired by the upcoming limited edition 2012 Tacoma TRD T|X TRD Baja Series coming next year, the Long Beach Racers Tacoma will be competing in the 2011 Tecate SCORE Baja 1000 with former freestyle motocross rider racer Andy Bell behind the wheel. Currently starring in MTV’s Nitro Circus, Andy will be available to talk about this special Tacoma race truck and the upcoming BAJA 1000 at a press conference that will take place at the Toyota exhibit on Nov. 1 at 10 a.m. Pacific Time.

The race truck is a grassroots effort of Long Beach Racers, a group of Toyota enthusiasts who specialize in racing Toyota trucks in Baja. The truck is currently in contention for the SCORE Stock Mini class championship.

(from Toyota Press Release) 2011 SEMA Show: Toyota Ultimate Motocross Truck

Toyota, DC Shoes and West Coast Customs have teamed up to create the Ultimate Motocross Truck, which will make its debut at the 2011 SEMA Show in Las Vegas. Built on a Toyota Tundra full-size pickup, DC Shoes used valuable feedback from their Motocross athletes to help create a truck that had everything a rider needs to make an event trip easier. They took this input and passed it along to West Coast Customs who performed the build.

West Coast Customs used a Tundra Double Cab 4×4 equipped with the powerful 5.7-liter V8 and six-speed electronically-controlled transmission with intelligence. The truck also features Tundras standard bed and is a certified Flex Fuel vehicle.

An array of modifications were built into this special Tundra enabling it to tackle the roughest terrain and it’s equipped with everything a Motocross rider requires. Modifications include a suspension lift from Camburg Racing, shocks by Fox Racing, KMC 18 x 9-inch wheel mounted to General 35 x 12.5 x 18 tires, custom rough-texture paint by Line-X, a roof rack that can also be used as a viewing deck, fold-up bed sides, a suicide tailgate, a gas pump and water pressure washer located in the bed, an air compressor, a winch to load bikes, a hidden ramp, custom embroidered interior and much more.

The Ultimate Motocross Tundra will be a featured vehicle at a Toyota press conference on Tuesday, Nov. 1 at 10 a.m. Pacific Time at the SEMA Show. World Freestyle Motocross champion and X Games gold medalist Nate Adams will be on hand to talk about the Supercross Tundra.

After the SEMA Show the truck will go on tour to various events including the St. Louis Auto Show, North American International Auto Show in Detroit, the 2012 Supercross Series, and in December will be featured on the reality TV show “Inside West Coast Customs” (Custom My Ride in the UK) shown on TLC and the Discovery Channel.

The 2011 SEMA Show will feature the debut of the Toyota Yaris B-Spec Club Racer at a press conference in the Toyota exhibit in Nov. 1 at 10 a.m. Pacific Time. It is the first race car built for competition in the U.S. from the next-generation 2012 Yaris SE.

(from Toyota Press Release) 2011 SEMA Show: 2012 Toyota Camry Daytona 500 Pace Car

On display at the 2011 SEMA Show Toyota exhibit will be the all-new 2012 Camry Pace Car, which will lead the field for the start of the 54th running of the Daytona 500® on February 26. It will be the first time a non-GM, Ford or Chrysler nameplate has paced the “Great American Race®.” David Reutimann, Camry Sprint Cup Driver for Michael Waltrip Racing, will be on hand to talk about the Camry Pace Car during a press conference at the SEMA Show in the Toyota exhibit on Nov. 1 at 10 a.m. Pacific Time.

The Camry Pace Car is based on the all-new 2012 Camry SE, which carries a powerful 268 horsepower V6 under the hood. It is specially-equipped with Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymetric tires mounted on BBS RS 8.5 x 19 wheels, a StopTech Big Brake Kit, TRD custom stainless steel exhaust and Tein adjustable suspension. Safety equipment includes a roll cage, four-point Simpson racing seat belts, Whelen LFL Liberty LED lightbar, and an on-board fire extinguisher.

Camry has been the best-selling car in America 13 of the past 14 years and for nine years running. The all-new Camry features a bold, sophisticated new design with a more spacious interior, improved driving dynamics and an even quieter ride than before. The new model features class leading safety, fuel economy and multi-media technology.

Toyota has previously provided pace vehicles at several NASCAR tracks, including Auto Club Speedway of Southern California, Charlotte Motor Speedway, Chicagoland Speedway, Dover (Del.) International Speedway, California’s Infineon Raceway, Kansas Speedway, Martinsville (Va.) Speedway, Nashville Superspeedway, New Hampshire Motor Speedway, Phoenix International Raceway, Richmond (Va.) International Raceway, Wisconsin’s Road America and Watkins Glen (N.Y.) International.

In 2004, Toyota began participating in NASCAR competition by fielding Tundra’s in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS). In 2007, Toyota began competing in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series (NSCS) and the NASCAR Nationwide Series (NNS) with the Camry.

Toyota has won three consecutive manufacturer’s titles in the NNS (2008-2010) with the Camry, and Toyota racers have earned one driver’s title (Kyle Busch in 2009) and registered 60 race victories in the NNS. In NSCS competition, Camry drivers have earned 36 first-place trophies.

In seven seasons participating in the NCWTS, Toyota has captured five consecutive manufacturer’s championships (2006-2010), and Tundra drivers have won driver’s titles with Todd Bodine (2006 and 2010) and Johnny Benson (2008), and have earned 88 race wins.

At Daytona International Speedway, Toyota drivers have recorded eight NASCAR wins across NASCAR’s three national touring series, including one NSCS win (Kyle Busch in 2008), two NNS wins (Denny Hamlin in 2008 and Tony Stewart in 2008) and five NCWTS wins. In 2008, Hamlin claimed Toyota’s first-ever NSCS victory in a non-points qualifying event to determine the Daytona 500 starting lineup.

Toyota has finally built something that will compete with the Smart Fortwo, the Scion iQ. We are expected to see it hit dealer showrooms around March of next year. The iQ is said to have a 3+1 seating arrangement that will allow three people to fit inside the car with an extra spot for a youngster or car seat. Scion is saying it will also hold a real storage capacity despite its small size. Stay tuned or further updates.

Power comes from Subaru’s 2.0-L, 4-cylinder Boxer , which has been given a turbo boost.  Specs are not yet known, although there is speculation that it could share similar numbers with the Boxer found in Japan’s Limited Impreza R205.  Ride height has been lowered by 30mm, compared to the original FT-86, and grip is provided by a set of Bridgestone Potenza RE050s on 19″ rims.

The G Sport also gets an interesting bit of technology.  A GPS unit allows the driver to record the car’s movement around a track and replay the lap virtually, using a PS3.  Users can simply observe a replay of the lap, or race against themselves, with a visual representation of their actual car and lap-time.  Pretty sweet, but don’t most gamers play video games because driving their cars on the actual track is just a fantasy?  I mean, if you can blast around the track in your real-deal FT-86, why bother with the PS3?  Still very cool though.

…the Ford F series pickup…again.

The honored F was redone for ’09.  But once the shining child of the American auto market, the F is far from its prime.  The pickup achieved its high-point in ’04 with almost 940,000 units sold.  The number for ’09?  Well under 414,000.  With all the cash, advertising, and labor put into it, the F couldn’t break out of the recession’s pull.  The Chevrolet Silverado (#3) was well behind it with 317,000, and Dodge Ram (#10) came in with a rather weak 177,000 units.

The big truck losers?  The GMC Sierra came nowhere near the Silverado’s numbers (112,000), making the argument for us that it’s time to assimilate the damn thing into the Chevy line.  The Toyota Tundra, Nissan Titan, Honda Ridgeline, and Ford Explorer were nowhere to be seen.  The smaller Tacoma, Escape, and RAV4 all did well, however.

The Toyota Camry was the top car and #2 overall.  The sale decline with the Camry was small, as the sedan managed to push out 357,000 units.  Behind it were the Corolla with 297,000, the Honda Accord with 290,000, and Civic with 260,000.  The only American car to break into the top ten was Ford’s Fusion.  That came in at #9 with 181,000.chevy silverado for sale
