Video: Topgear Test-Drives the Lexus LF-A

Top gear drives the 552 HP super car from Lexus. The 0-60 time is 3.7 seconds. Very nice car but still in the end it is a Lexus. I’d personally rather have a corvette ZR-1 or a Nissan GT-R which are both a lot cheaper and faster.

Lexus LF-A to be Lease-Only

Lexus is preempting that scourge of auto sales–the speculator–by making its low-volume LF-A exotic available for lease only.  Speculation has been a big problem in the sales world since the 1970s, when frequent special editions of vehicles were released to demand.  More recently, cars such as the Ferrari Enzo and Alfa-Romeo 8C have been victims, with early buyers scooping them up only to turn around and sell them for 50% over retail.  The LF-A’s estimated numbers were to be $375,000 and five hundred units per year; while the lease plan will undercut speculation, Lexus will offer the cars for sale post-lease.

Video: 2011 Lexus LFA Officially Revealed

The Lexus LFA made its offical debut. Power for the rear-wheel-drive Lexus LFA, which is constructed using advanced carbon fiber technology, comes from a mid-front mounted 4.8L V10 engine that red lines at 9,000 rpm and makes 552-hp with a maximum torque of 354 lb-ft. Mated to a 6-speed Automated Sequential Gearbox, the LFA goes from 0-62 mph in just 3.7 seconds (0-60 mph in 3.5 seconds) with a top speed of 202 mph. Lexus says the LFA has been in development for a decade and is the ultimate supercar. Is it worth $375,000? Lexus will make only 500 for now. Still is it worth more than an Italian Ferrari or Lamborghini?

The LF-Ch represents Lexus’s first effort at tapping into the EU’s popular small hatch market.  Hoping to breakup the dominance of the Audi A3 and BMW 1 series, the LF-Ch appeals to the growing green movement with a hybrid powertrain.  The gas-electric engine has gained real PR traction in Europe, dominating the Frankfurt show (where diesels were almost absent).  The LF-Ch will borrow components from the HS250h and RX400h, but that still won’t help the odds of it hitting the States.  The hatch is intended as a Euro-exclusive.

Facelifted Lexus LS Revealed as Cure for Insomnia

Thank God we won’t have to wait for any damn teaser shots on this one.  The blogosphere has spoiled Lexus’s 2010 surprise facelift for the LS, its top-line saloon.  All that sticks out of my mind is that it resembles a Camry.  (No one’s going to call this a concourse beauty three decades from now.)  Where is Bill Mitchell when you need him?

A Glimpse at Lexus’s Luxury Hatch

Yes, I know: this rough sketch isn’t news in itself, but it’s the closest the media has to an official shot of Lexus’s Euro hatchback.  Toyota is convinced in order to break out of the corner it’s stuck in, it’ll have to branch out into the compact hatch market BMW and Audi have done well in holding.  The car will be revealed in Frankfurt, but the depth of Lexus’s planning isn’t known.  Toyota’s banked on hybrid-electrics as the green path in the EU, but diesel remains deeply entrenched.

British Police Get Outfitted with New Lexus IS-Fs

Damn those Brits: their secret agents get to drive Aston Martins, while ours are stuck with used Fiestas and Rabbits; now even their police are getting it better.  The local county fleet of Humberside is replacing its all-wheel-drive Subies with Lexus’s performance-monster, the IS-F.  Police have had trouble keeping up with local thugs in souped-up street rods and exotics; no doubt the IS-F is a fancy way of resolving that problem.

Lexus’s New Euro Hatch Set for 2011

Lexus is going push a new compact luxury hatch to better compete with the BMW 1 series, Audi A3, and Volvo C30.  The hatch, targeting the EU only, will apparently employ a gas-electric 2.4 L inline-four engine and likely a 6-spd. automatic gearbox.  The new vehicle will not be based on the HS250 hybrid sedan, but may use a modified version of the IS platform.  The new hatch is slated for the 2011 model year.
