With Jaguar Cleaned Up, Tata Moves to Awaken Land Rover
There was a lot of skepticism about India’s Tata Motors acquiring the old Motherland’s prized Land Rover and Jag properties. On the Jag end, the skepticism has subsided with heightened reliability and the likes of the XK, XF, and XJ. (It should be noted, development began way back in the Ford era.) This week saw breaking news on two critical Land Rover projects: a replacement for the Defender (the purest Rover SUV left) and acknowledgement that the LRX project is underway.
Refresh:
The LRX is a two-door sport-ute concept unveiled in Detroit in January of last year. The LRX runs on a diesel-electric 2.0 L flat-four. The LRX uses lightweight composite materials, regenerative braking, and a flex-fuel setup to achieve maximum engineering efficiency. Using a hazy conversion standard, the LRX should achieve a minimum fuel economy rate in the middle forties.
Jaguar and Land Rover Bleed; Bridge Loan Coming
Looks like Jaguar and Land Rover can’t get a break. The two sibling brands haven’t even been under Tata’s control for two years, and yet they have a shared loss of $1.1 billion. The recession has taken a big toll of Jag and Rover sales, though you can expect to see an uptick for the former with the new XJ. In order to prevent another flow of unemployed, the UK treasury is pushing a heavy bridge loan to keep the operations stable.
Officially Official: 2010 Range Rover with 510hp Supercharged V8
There are the first official photos of the facelifted Range Rover that made its debut at the New York Auto Show today. The Range Rover has recieved very minor details and a new 5.0 liter supercharged V8 engine that cranks out 510hp. The exterior grille, bumper, headlights have been changed as well as adding a LED strip which all the new cars are doing now. The interior has a new trim. Land Rover also claims that adding a bigger engine also improved fuel economy. I’m not sure if this is a smart move by Land Rover in these difficult times and with high gas prices to put in a bigger engine in an already gas guzzler and redsign an SUV which no one has interest in.
