The wraps have been taken off the new Subaru 2015 WRX at the 2013 LA Auto show, revealing an extensively reworked sedan that has power and fuel efficiency. This car has an improved, smart looking design that represents a definite improvement over earlier models.
The engine is a direct fuel injection, turbocharged 2.0 liter 4 cylinder that puts out 268 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. Peak torque is reached between 2,000 and 5,000 rpm. It has a top mounted intercooler that intakes air through the hood scoop. This represents a 3 horsepower improvement over the 2013 Impreza WRX, but it improves on torque by 14 lb-ft. The peak output is also maximized, occurring across a wider range of engine revolutions.
This engine can be connected to a 6 speed manual transmission. This transmission is capable of taking the WRX from 0 to 60 mph in 5.4 seconds. There are also 6 and 8 speed continuously variable transmission options. These transmissions will take 6.4 seconds to get from 0 to 60 mph. The 6 speed manual definitely looks like a better buy since it gets better gas mileage, unless the driver in question is especially keen on CVTs for some reason.
Yes, you heard that right – the 6 speed manual transmission will get better gas mileage than the CVT. The former will get 21 city and 28 highway mpg, and the latter will get only 19, and 25, respectively. Each transmission type will have different all-wheel-drive systems. The six speed manual transmission will employ a continuous AWD setup with a 50:50 torque split. The CVT transmission will make use the system known by Subaru as Variable Toruqe Distribution. This has a 45:55 split.
The WRX, for anyone who doesn’t know, is now considered a distinct model from the Impreza WRX. That said, it looks quite a bit similar – sporty in an understated, responsible sort of way. The new model has a new, stiffer platform for more agile handling. It also has a suspension tuned for performance and larger brakes. Finally, it has more interior room and the the wheelbase is 1 inch larger.
The WRX is a model that appeals mostly to young male buyers who want a Subaru vehicle that offers performance as well as some reasonable mileage and many other well-loved WRX characteristics. This new version doesn’t disappoint, and should prove a big hit with this and other demographics.
