Exclusive SLS AMG video: Behind the scenes of the world’s fastest 3D film.

For one day only the legendary Isle of Man TT motorcycle course was closed, a ruthless David Coulthard was let loose in an SLS AMG, and a revolutionary 3D short film was created. As seen in today’s Metro newspaper in London, the footage is due to be aired during the Liverpool vs Arsenal match this Sunday in pubs with Sky 3D channels.

The following video consists of the exclusive behind the scene video capturing exactly what happened as a team of 72 experts, led by producer Jeremy Hart (who also produced The Fast and The Famous), ambitiously filmed the SLS AMG at extreme speeds in a restricted time frame. Hart explains the technical challenges to the Metro:

‘We needed the very best expertise we could find in the field, both technically and creatively,’ Hart said. ‘Then we needed a pursuit camera vehicle that could cope with the very high speeds Coulthard would reach, not to mention a helicopter with technology to handle 3D camera gear.’

‘We were going to be producing a 3D film at speeds and in a time frame nobody else has attempted,’ says Hart, describing the difficulty in making 3D work well at speed, without ruining the experience for the audience. Director of photography Geoff Boyle added ‘Everyone I talked to said: “You can’t do this with a 3D camera”, Well we’ve done it.’

This footage not only conveys the technical difficulty of producing this groundbreaking short film – it also shows the incredible drifts, slides and near-crashes that occurred during the course of shooting the film.
