Penske Deal Fails, Saturn Likely to Be Terminated
There’s a part of me that feels vindicated over this.
Roger Penske was praised by Detroiters as a savior and model for the US auto world. Somehow, Penske fans ignore his awkward Smart USA distribution network and the inefficiency of its mini-cars. Well, the anticipated Saturn Renaissance ain’t happening–Penske was unable to find a proper supplier for Saturn, meaning the marque will likely be retired.
I pointed out that Penske had a major problem finding a quality supplier that could offer well-built, stylish, and affordable vehicles up to US standards. That’s easier said than done, as has been experienced by many an entrepreneur.
Now add Penske to that list.

Expect to See the Sebring and Avenger Around Longer…
The Fiat Group won’t be axing Chrysler’s two poorly regarded midsizers, the Sebring and Avenger, just yet. Both cars were hammered by the press for everything from their cheap interiors to sloppy fuel economy. While their retirements have been expected, the cars do sell in enough volume to keep the business trudging along. Both editions will continue to the 2012 model year, but specifics on their replacements are unknown. The rumor mill has the next-gen Sebring serving as the sibling or duplicate of an a key Alfa saloon; the Avenger is unknown.
GM Ends eBay Program after Unimpressive Results
GM’s spokesmen called it a success, but so did Montgomery after the Market Garden fiasco. We all saw the GM/eBay partnership as a silly publicity stunt with no real chance for promise–now the General agrees. After a month of serious effort, company brass pulled the plug on the effort in favor of a couple more mainstream sales pushes.
With Jaguar Cleaned Up, Tata Moves to Awaken Land Rover
There was a lot of skepticism about India’s Tata Motors acquiring the old Motherland’s prized Land Rover and Jag properties. On the Jag end, the skepticism has subsided with heightened reliability and the likes of the XK, XF, and XJ. (It should be noted, development began way back in the Ford era.) This week saw breaking news on two critical Land Rover projects: a replacement for the Defender (the purest Rover SUV left) and acknowledgement that the LRX project is underway.
Refresh:
The LRX is a two-door sport-ute concept unveiled in Detroit in January of last year. The LRX runs on a diesel-electric 2.0 L flat-four. The LRX uses lightweight composite materials, regenerative braking, and a flex-fuel setup to achieve maximum engineering efficiency. Using a hazy conversion standard, the LRX should achieve a minimum fuel economy rate in the middle forties.
Fiat Pushing Hard on Chrysler Recovery
Reworked editions of the 300, Charger, and Grand Cherokee have been underway with a 2011 target release. Fiat Group CEO Sergio Marchionne is now publicly showcasing similar enhancements for several other vehicles in order to maintain approval from the President’s automotive task force.
The Marchionne plan will heavily revise Chrysler minivans and compacts. The minivan news is not surprising, but Fiat’s intention to fix up the critically panned Caliber and Compass took the wind out of us. The Caliber and Compass have ranked poorly in in comparison tests, but discounts and favorable buyer incentives seemed to have kept sales steady.
Also on the facelift bandwagon is Jeep’s Patriot SUV and Chrysler’s neglected PT Cruiser.
