Friday Flashback: Chargin’ from Down Under
America and Australia share a lot in common: besides being former British colonies, the people of these nations have an adventurous spirit–just think of the West and the Outback. That spirit was given a boost in the 1960s when the muscle car quickly gripped Yankee, Canuck, and Aussie drivers.
The brawny atmosphere dithered away here in the US during the ’70s, but it was kept quite alive in the land down under. Take a look at this TV promo for an Australian Charger, brought back to light from the guys at Top Gear Australia.

Penske Inches Closer to Saturn-Badged Renaults
There’s been lots of buzz floating around the blogosphere about Roger Penske’s plan for Saturn. Penske hopes the seal his buyout of the GM division by the start of the fall. His major concern is long-term product development–Saturn currently builds only three vehicles: the Aura, Vue, and Outlook.
Penske and his staff have been looking to foreign businesses as a future supply base. Recently, Samsung of Korea came out as one of the finalists, but France’s Renault is said to be the likely winner. Renault, which has a controlling stake in Nissan, has a wide-range of competitve vehicles in the EU and has wanted to re-establish a foothold in North America. Penske’s been drawn to its wide menu of small and fuel-efficient vehicles, something sorely lacking from US carmakers.

BMW Preparing Frankfurt Coup?
Dr. Klaus Draeger, a BMW exec, has hinted that a new sports car concept will be making its debut at Frankfurt’s coming auto show. The new concept is rumored to be a sport coupe, though its exact placement is up in the air. BMW currently has the Z4, so one could consider the addition as an upmarket companion. BMW pursued such with the Z8 in the 1990s. The new move would be a marketing coup for Germany’s top expo, and could signal a rival to Mercedes’s coming SLS.
RUF Ups the Ante with the RT12 S
For anyone who knows a thing about German tuners, it’s well-established that RUF is the pre-eminent Porsche custom shop. RUF has proven that again with the RT12 “S,” a slightly improved version of the already-extreme RT12. The new S now boasts 685 peak horsepower from the turbo flat-six motor, enlarged air ducts for increased intake, and widened fenders for a more aggressive look. Top speed for the S is now set at 224 mph. Pricing for the new RUF is $360,000–a lot, but you have to pay to play.
