Redneck Sports Car Wonder Gets Closer to Sale
Texas gearhead Neal Bailey and his young enterprise, BXR, are getting closer to releasing a test-ready prototype of his Blade sports car. It may not sound all that impressive to have some guy from Texas manufacturing roadgoing versions of a garage project, but his little roadster got some good press from the Web.
Here are the facts:

- The Blade will be powered by a front-mounted 550 hp Roush 5.4 L V-8 mated to a six-speed manual
- The body will be made of fiberglass, while the chassis and roll cage will be of steel
- Four-wheel antilock disc brakes are standard, along with a fully independent suspension
- Curb weight will range from 2,200 to 2,800 lbs., depending on options
The specs don’t hurt the car’s case. Sixty is hit in three and a half seconds, thanks to that Roush powertrain and light package.
Not all the news is pleasant. Bailey now has an assembly staff, thanks to a private investor. The economics of managing automobile production (albeit of just fifty units) has doubled the original price tag to $100,000. Not only is that more than Panoz’s independent Esperante roadster, it’s also more expensive than either a Mercedes SLK55 AMG or a Dodge Viper SRT-10.
How this’ll end, time will tell.
