May means the first taste of warmer weather and tire-smoking get-togethers. And what better month than May, then, to announce the return of one of Chevy’s high performance superstars?
During the National Corvette Museum’s C5 & C6’s Bash, the 2010 Grand Sport was unveiled. Drawing from its racecar pedigree, the new Grand Sport replaces the Z51 package option and is designed to bring performance closer to the Z06. It features the LS3 6.2L engine rated at 436 horsepower and 428 pound feet of torque when fitted with an optional upgraded exhaust. (With this two-mode exhaust, we wonder if the Grand Sport’s sound will rival the one that emanates from the Z06 exhaust.) And for handling and braking performance, they’ve even outfitted the Grand Sport with larger Z06 Corvette brake rotors and calipers.
In 1996, the last time a Grand Sport edition was offered, it was a limited edition of 1,000 vehicles. This time, the Grand Sport is designed to replace the Z51 suspension package and provide Corvette buyers with a “middle ground” between the softer, more luxurious ride of a base Corvette and the stiffer, all-business mien of the Z06. To this end, the Grand Sport will be available in both coupe and convertible body styles - notable because a convertible isn’t an option in the sport-oriented Z06.
The appearance of the Grand Sport shares much with this Corvette’s recent predecessors, tempered with a dash of muscle car history. The Z06 style front fascia, lower lip spoiler, and fenders are enhanced by dual vertical gills. The rear fenders are also in the Z06 style and feature functional brake cooling ducts. An appearance package is available that adds dual stripes on the front end in silver or red, giving it retro appeal with a modern twist.
Style and performance of the 2010 Grand Sport aside, existing C5 and C6 owners shouldn’t resolve to be beaten at the track. The Grand Sport won’t go on sale until September, and in the meantime, a few choice aftermarket Corvette parts will get you close to the look and feel of this package and insure you stay ahead of the competition.

I am only 10 years old but I think that corvettes are the meanest and fastest cars in the world, and they own the street’s. When I get 16 I hope there is one in my driveway. My dad is a Mustang man, he does not know what he is missing.
